Advantages of Using Non-Slip Floor Coatings

If you’re planning to coat your concrete floors with epoxy resin, one of your biggest concerns might be the risk of slipping—especially when the surface gets wet. Safety should always come first, whether in homes, workshops, or commercial spaces. Fortunately, there are effective ways to make epoxy floors safer without compromising on appearance or durability.

How Non-Slip Coatings Improve Safety

Epoxy coatings naturally cure into a smooth, glass-like surface, which can become slippery when wet. To prevent this, a Grip Traction Additive can be mixed directly into the epoxy before application. This additive creates micro-textures that enhance traction while also improving the coating’s resistance to abrasion and wear.

Other flooring systems—such as polyaspartic, polyurethane, and polyurea coatings—can also be customized for non-slip performance. These coatings often incorporate materials like colored flakes, chips, or quartz to give the surface extra grip. Even with these textured systems, adding a traction additive provides an extra layer of safety.

Tips for Applying Non-Slip Epoxy Coatings

For thick epoxy systems, such as 100% solids epoxy, it’s best to mix the additive into the resin and pour it in ribbons across the surface. As the epoxy spreads, the additive distributes evenly throughout the mix. Rolling the coating with a roller helps maintain a smooth and consistent finish.

Some installers prefer sprinkling the additive onto the final topcoat, but this can sometimes lead to uneven coverage or clumps. Mixing it in beforehand generally produces a more uniform, slip-resistant surface. The finished floor remains smooth underfoot—comfortable to walk on—yet provides excellent traction, even when wet.
