Can You Paint Laminate Flooring?

Absolutely — painting laminate flooring is possible. Laminate is known for being tough and durable, but after years of daily traffic, scratches, and scuffs, even the most hard-wearing floors can start to look tired. While replacing the flooring is one option, giving it a fresh coat of paint can completely revive your space at a fraction of the cost.

Should You Paint Laminate Floors?

Before you grab a brush, it’s worth knowing that painting laminate comes with a few challenges. The slick, glossy surface of laminate doesn’t naturally hold paint well. Common issues include:

  • Paint that won’t stick or easily peels off

  • Using the wrong primer or paint type, leading to poor durability

Over-sanding and damaging the surface layer

A finish that looks great at first but quickly wears down under chairs, shoes, or pet claws

If you’re still confident and ready for a DIY project, here’s a practical step-by-step guide to help you get long-lasting results.

1. Clean the Surface

Start by giving your laminate floor a deep clean. Sweep or vacuum to remove all dust and debris, then mop thoroughly to lift grime and residue. Take a moment to inspect for dents or scratches and fill them so the surface is level before sanding.

2. Lightly Sand to Remove the Gloss

Laminate floors have a glossy, protective topcoat—usually a thin plastic layer—that makes them stain and water-resistant. However, this same coating prevents paint from bonding. Lightly sand the surface using fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding machine until the shine is gone. Be careful not to sand too aggressively, or you could damage the laminate underneath.

3. Fill Cracks and Smooth the Surface

After sanding, check again for cracks or small holes. Use caulk or filler to repair them, then clean off all dust and debris. A perfectly smooth base will give you a more professional finish later.

4. Apply Primer

Priming helps the paint grip the laminate and improves durability. Use a high-quality latex primer and roll on one or two even coats. Allow the primer to dry completely—ideally overnight—before painting.

5. Paint the Floor

Once the primer has cured, you can start painting. Choose your application method based on the size and layout of the room:

  • Roller: Best for covering large, open areas quickly

  • Brush: Ideal for tight spaces and edges around cabinets or fixtures

  • Spray paint: Great for empty rooms without furniture

Mask off your baseboards, walls, or pipes before painting. For best results, use a tough, scuff-resistant floor paint such as porch or deck paint. Latex floor paint also works well, but avoid acrylic paints—they tend to peel easily. Allow the paint to dry for at least 24–48 hours before walking on it.

Should You Seal Painted Laminate Floors?

For extra protection and shine, it’s highly recommended to apply a polyurethane sealant over the paint. The sealant guards against water damage, scuffs, and general wear from foot traffic. It also makes cleaning easier and can be reapplied if the surface becomes dull or scratched.

To help preserve your freshly painted floors:

  • Add felt pads under furniture legs

  • Avoid walking with shoes indoors

  • Keep pets out of the room if possible

Painted laminate floors can be slightly slippery, so tread carefully until you get used to the feel.

Final Thoughts

Painting laminate flooring takes time and patience, but it’s a budget-friendly way to transform your room without a full replacement. If you decide the effort isn’t worth it, upgrading to new laminate planks is still a great alternative that delivers a fresh, modern look.
