Does oil pollution affect the construction of floor paint?

The construction of epoxy floor paint in oil-contaminated areas has long been a major challenge in the industry. Oil penetration can lead to severe quality issues such as floor paint peeling, blistering, 

and discoloration. This article presents an engineering-verified solution to completely overcome the difficulties of floor paint construction on oil-contaminated surfaces.

1. Three Fatal Impacts of Oil on Floor Paint

Destructive Damage to Adhesion

Oil forms an isolation film within the capillary pores of concrete, blocking the chemical bonding between the epoxy primer and the base surface.

Measured data: The pull-off strength in oil-contaminated areas is ≤ 0.8MPa (standard requirement ≥ 1.5MPa).


Abnormal Curing of the Coating

Amine curing agents undergo a saponification reaction with oil, resulting in permanent stickiness and incomplete curing of the floor paint coating.


Oil expands when heated (ground temperature can reach 60℃ in summer), pushing up the floor paint coating to form bubble clusters.


Late-Stage Penetration and Migration

Residual oil continues to seep upward during use, causing 晕染 - like oil stains on the surface of the epoxy floor paint.


2. Four-Level Purification System for Oil Stain Treatment

Level 1: Mechanical Removal

Use a milling machine to remove the 3-5mm contaminated layer (for heavily oil-contaminated areas).


Grind with diamond grinding pads until fresh concrete is exposed (for moderately oil-contaminated areas).


Level 2: Deep Chemical Cleaning

Spray an emulsifying cleaner (such as Sibo Rui OT-300) and allow it to react for 20 minutes.

Rinse vertically with a high-pressure steam cleaner (120℃/150bar).

Acceptance standard: The water film spreads continuously without shrinking.


Level 3: High-Temperature Activation Treatment

Quickly burn the surface for 2-3 seconds with a gas burner (300-400℃).

Immediately use a vacuum cleaner to remove vaporized oil.

Note: This method is only applicable to concrete bases of C30 grade or higher.


Level 4: Permanent Sealing

Apply a special oil-resistant primer (such as Sibo Rui EP-500), which penetrates and cures to form a molecular sieve barrier.

Key indicator: Oil penetration resistance ≥ 72h (per ASTM D1308 standard).


3. Special Floor Paint System Solution

Double-Layer Protection System

First layer: Epoxy oil-resistant primer (thickness 0.3mm, containing zinc oxide inhibitor).

Second layer: Polyurethane oil-resistant topcoat (thickness 1.2mm, resistant to engine oil immersion for 1000h).

Reinforced Structural Design

Add a glass fiber cloth intermediate layer (suitable for areas with active cracks).

Edge reinforcement strip: Reserve expansion joints around equipment foundations and fill them with polysulfide sealant.

Emergency Maintenance Plan

Local oil seepage points: Use injectable plugging agent (polyurethane foaming type).

Surface oil stains: Spot-treat with a special degreaser (without damaging the floor paint coating).


4. Golden Standards for Engineering Acceptance

Base Surface Inspection

Moisture content ≤ 6% (measured by an electronic detector).

Pull-off strength ≥ 2.0MPa (the failure interface is within the concrete).

Oil Resistance Test

No penetration after pouring engine oil for 24 hours.

No oil stain transfer when wiped with a cotton swab.

Service Life Guarantee

Lightly oil-contaminated areas: More than 10 years.

Heavily oil-contaminated areas: 5-7 years (annual maintenance and inspection required).

Through this solution, perfect construction of epoxy floor paint can be achieved even in heavily oil-contaminated places such as machine repair workshops and food processing areas. 

SPR recommends: A 3×3m sample area test must be conducted before construction to verify the effectiveness of the plan.
